Council votes to add canine unit
for police dept.
By Beth Church
Funded by confiscated drug money, a canine unit will be added
this spring to the Rossford Police Department.
Rossford City Council voted 6-1 at Monday’s meeting to contract
with Shallow Creek Kennels in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania, to
purchase a German or Belgian shepherd and provide six weeks of
training for an officer and dog, beginning in April, at a cost
of $12,750.
Councilman Jerry Staczek voted against the proposal.
Mayor Neil MacKinnon III praised the program, especially because
it will not affect the city’s general fund.
“I feel this makes our community safer,” he said. “This tool is
paying for itself and allowing us to get better equipped to
fight crime, take drugs off the street and put drug dealers in
jail.”
The dog also can be used to search for missing children or
adults and search buildings or open areas for escaped suspects,
including those who may be armed.
“This program will enhance the Rossford Police Department’s
community policing concept,” Police Chief Glenn Goss said.
